One of our most used tools is our SMS Mailer. If you do not use it yet, do not hesitate to go and discover it, you can access it easily from your portal access. One of the best kept secrets of our Mailer are the templates and custom placeholders functionalities. Yet, this can save you a lot of time when configuring your SMS campaigns. To make your messages more personal, you can also insert custom fields in these SMS.
Imagine that you send out happy birthday SMS to all your employees and that you include a personal gift coupon that they can use in your company’s web shop. You can send out the SMS on a daily basis with just a few clicks if you have prepared your campaign correctly. There are 3 easy steps to make sure you do that efficiently:
Create needed custom placeholders
In the SMS Mailer, go to settings, custom fields and create a custom field entitled “birthday gift coupon”. Make sure that you make your field available by clicking “display this field: yes” right under your custom placeholder. Do the same for your contact’s name, as this is not a default value.
Doing this manipulation only creates the fields in the system, but you cannot associate any values to the field here. When made active, the field will show in your contact lists along with the default fields (phone number and creation date). The fields you create here will be the fields that you can use as custom placeholders.
Upload your contact information
To add values to your custom fields, prepare an excel including necessary information, such as your employees’ names, their phone numbers and their birthday gift coupon numbers. The titles you give to each column need to match the names that will appear in your SMS Mailer.
For this scenario, we would suggest to entitle your columns “phone number”, “name” and “birthday gift coupon”, if these match the custom fields you previously created. In the SMS Mailer, you can now go to contacts, contacts and click the “import contacts” button. And this is how easily you can create custom placeholders to use in your SMS!
Please not that your contact’s phone number is used as a unique ID to manage the contacts. This means that you have one row per phone number. If you upload a phone number that already exists, the information of the other fields will be updated according to the information you have in your excel sheet. If you import phone numbers that do not already exist, a new record will be created.
Create you message template, use custom placeholders and send out your SMS!
Go to the SMS Mailer’s settings and click on “Templates”, then on “Create template”. On this page, you will be able to prepare the message you want to send, using custom placeholders. In our scenario, you will probably have a message that looks like the following:
“Happy birthday @name@, we would like to offer you a great coupon on our web shop! Use code @birthday gift coupon@ when placing your order! Enjoy your day!”
The custom placeholders you can use are listed right under the message box. This will include the custom placeholders you created. To add a placeholder in your text, you can simply click on the one you choose, it will be added directly into your message.
Sending your SMS in just a few clicks
To send out your happy birthday SMS to your employee, go to Mailing, New in the SMS mailer. In the mailing’s settings, you will find a field “use template” right under the mailing’s name. Switch the button to “yes” and select the template you created in the dropdown list that appears. You now just have to select your recipients and click on send. How easy was that?
If you want to go further than custom placeholders and templates, you can automate this further by scheduling the SMS in advance or by using the groups functionality of contacts.
